Hi guys,
So we've made a promotional video for our blog! It's titled 'Nostalgia' and features footage of things at Macquarie University put into reverse, creating that feeling of nostalgia that you'll have in the future! It's basically trying to tell you not to waste your time at university, and have the best experience ever!
The video was created by Tim, Maya, Jeremy and Kyle using only footage from our phones, and mixed together with the song "Pea Green Bote" by Fishing. Let us know if you like it!
The Video can be found in the link below!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMvu4eX0UnE&feature=youtu.be
Note: We've had some issues with blogger trying to find our video to post, so when we correct this we'll post up the video as per norm. Thanks for your patience!

Student Accommodation
By Jeremy
Thomas
I know that
accommodation is a massive factor for a lot of students at MQU. But where
exactly can you go? I had a look myself and found some pretty cool places.
- Macquarie University Village - Of course the most closest and easiest for Macquarie students is acquiring accommodation at Macquarie itself!
- Iglu – Both in Chatswood and central, this place seems fairly practical for students. Modern design with your own desk and shelves etc.
- Urban Nest – Although it’s located a little further away from the University don’t rule it out. Again it’s fairly modern with all of your study needs in mind.
- Student & Backpacker Accommodation – Provides great places in Sydney if you’re looking for something that isn’t too pricey.
- UniLodge – Perhaps a little to far out but still worth a mention. Modern design and a Short walk to central station.
I guess if you’re like me and not keen on student
Accommodation, get some friends together or acquaint yourself with other
individuals looking for accommodation. Renting in some cases can be cheaper and
an easier option.

Coffee @ Macquarie
By Tim Cheeseman
Before writing this post I thought 'what's the one thing that a university student needs most at university?' Education? Resources? Study areas? Friends? Of course, these things are important, but not as important as a good cup of coffee! I find myself to be a bit of a coffee enthusiast, so here are my recommendations on some good coffee places at MQU!
Rating: 3/5
Located in the Hub, Marxine's Cafe provides cheap coffee with a pretty good taste! I'd recommend trying the Cappuccino there, it has great flavour!
Brew Bar
Rating: 4/5
Brew Bar is located in the Hub, right across from Marxine's Cafe. The coffee is a little bit more expensive, but makes up for it in taste! I strongly
recommend a good latte during lunch!
The Library Cafe
Rating: 4/5
The Library's Cafe makes a pretty decent brew, and is conveniently placed at the entrance to the library. I'd recommend a good Mocha there, but make sure you have a pay pass card or cash because I got stuck having to go and get money out!
Wally's Coffee Cart
Rating: 4.5/5
Wally's Coffee Cart serves in my opinion, the best coffee at Macquarie! It's cheap and convenient if you're heading down Wally's Walk towards the Lotus Theatre or to the W buildings. I recommend getting the Vanilla Latte, it is heaven in a cup!
FOOD OPTIONS IN CAMPUS HUB
The Macquarie University Campus Hub is also known
as the 'food court'. Simply look at the photo below and you will know what I am
talking about.

Conception Day
By Jeremy Thomas
Conception day is MQU’s own music festival! Pretty cool huh?
Every year MQU supports and organises
this day for everyone to enjoy. With live bands, DJ’s, rides and many other
amusements, what more could you ask for?
Having attended conception day last year, I can say there is
much fun to be had. Exploring all the different stages of live bands and DJ’s
was great. Going on all the rides made me feel like a little kid,
especially riding the dodgem cars. Perfect day out if you’re after heaps of
fun.
Past conception day performances have included Bag raiders,
Art vs Science, Gyroscope, DJ Zanon, Grinspoon, British India, Van She and Nix.
Conception day also supports many student bands who can apply to perform on the
day.
Conception day is for everyone, not just university
students, So I highly recommend everyone attend conception day 2013.
Check out these 6 tips I found
for Conception day:

WHY IS THIS MAGAZINE ALL OVER CAMPUS?!
Written By Tim Cheeseman
As a first year student, I'm still new to the publications and projects that are at Macquarie University. One of the things I've noticed is that the magazine 'Grapeshot' is available for free everywhere you go. I decided to investigate to find out what it is!
Grapeshot is the main Student Publication at Macquarie University, providing content on a wide range of things such as music, food, art, videos, news and written pieces. It's created by students, for students in the hope that you'll read it and enjoy it!
The magazine is both a physical and online magazine, either placed everywhere on campus AND has regularly updated information online for your convenience! It's all about you as the students and they're always wanting to write about what you want to hear!
On that note, Grapeshot regularly take requests on topics of what you might want to hear about, as well as take submissions from you! So if you have an idea for a post, send them an email at grapeshot@mq.edu.au to find out more or visit them in the Campus Hub on level 1 to discuss your ideas. They're always open to them!
Check out the magazine all over campus, or visit their websites here:

It is understandable that unexpected things can happen to
you while studying at university. This is why student support is such a major
aspect at MQU.
Imagine for a second:
After the unlucky
event of breaking both of your legs in a car accident, your partner suddenly
calls and is asking for a divorce. They've now left you all alone to fend for
yourself…Great! To make matters worse, your boss leaves a message on your phone….simply
put, you've been fired.
I guess the above example was a bit dramatic I admit, but
I’m sure you can understand that life can be a little unfortunate at times.
Luckily for students at Macquarie there is support for such events.
·
Childcare services – Are you studying
with kids? No biggie. There are two childcare centres located on the grounds of Macquarie. Both Banksia cottage and Gumnut
cottage provide a safe and fostering environment for your kids while you’re out
doing the hard yards at university.
Banksia
cottage: ph. (02) 9850 7781
Gumnut cottage: ph. (02) 9850 7740
·
Counselling – If you have any particular psychological
or emotional problem, this is definitely the place to go. Trained professionals can help you with any sort of
problems you may have! Did I mention it’s free?
Ph.
(02) 9850 7497
·
Disability service- Having a disability,
whether permanent or temporary, can be a difficult aspect to cope with at
university. Luckily there are trained staff that can provide help in any sort
of circumstance you may have.
Ph. (02) 9850 7497
·
Medical service- Macquarie University
provides its own general practitioner service. If you have any sort of health
issues this is of course the best place to be.
Ph. (02) 9812 3944
·
Security- Of course priority number is
your safety! Security services operate 24/7 on campus with regular patrols,
monitoring alarms and CCTV.
Ph. (02) 9850 7112
·
Welfare service- If you’re having monetary
problems, renting issues, legal issues or academic progress issues then the
student welfare service can help you.

Old Library Reconstruction
WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO THE OLD LIBRARY AT
MQU?
I speak to those who have attended MQU for more than a year. I'm sure you have all walked past the old library and wondered either, what is going on in there? Or whatever will they turn it into? Well you will be glad to know that it is being converted into a MUSE or a Macquarie University Spatial Experience. The university has employed three excellent architects to design certain areas of the library. Take a look at one design below. If you want to see all three designs, visit this page:
After semester 2 2013, you won’t have to wonder aimlessly around the library looking for a desk, or death stare at those wasting time on the computers or even those who have fallen asleep or even better, you won’t be continuously told off for whispering to your friend…about an assignment! Tell us what you think about these designs.
The new space will provide a variety of flexible spaces that support the social learning environment and to push the boundaries of previously developed spaces. These spaces should consider areas for groups of 2, 4, 6 and 8+ students to gather to collaborate and work together or study while also providing opportunity for some more personal work spaces. These spaces should be considered the middle ground between the social and active environment of the Campus Hub (C10A) and the more formal and quiet spaces of the new Learning and Research Centre (Library) C3C.

Community Garden
Did you know that Macquaire University has a community garden? Check out the information below!
Also, another ‘diversity’ garden will be created near the MUSE building discussed in the previous post.
What is it?
Students, staff and community members are welcome. Students pat a small one-time fee of $5 to cover the cost of water and receive their very own plot for planting.
The community garden teaches and promotes organic growing practices. In addition, the garden also accepts up to 120kg of food waste from the Campus Engagement kitchens each week for composting.
- Members receive access to the garden during daylight hours 7 days a week
- Meetings and Working Bees are held on the first Sunday of each month at 4.00PM
Where is it?
The Community Garden is now located at the northwestern corner of Culloden and Talavera Road(adjacent to the road that leads into the University Sports Fields)
For more information, visit: http://www.mq.edu.au/about_us/strategy_and_initiatives/sustainability/areas_of_focus/food/community_garden/
Groups at MQU: Part 2! (electric boogaloo)

At last! It has arrived, the moment you've all been waiting for... Groups at Macquarie part 2 (electric boogaloo). First of all, if you have never seen 'Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo', go watch it after reading this post and start pursuing your break dancing career. But for now, I'll give you some more of my handpicked groups and activities that you might enjoy!

First of all, if you have never seen 'Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo', go watch it after reading this post and start pursuing your break dancing career. But for now, I'll give you some more of my handpicked groups and activities that you might enjoy!
Doctor Who Society
If you're a fan of Doctor Who like myself, this may just be the group for you! With an array of members, DOCSOC helps you to embrace your inner nerd, whether a fan of the show or not. They meet to discuss the show and science fiction related interests where it's a great way to socialise.
Their aim is "To provide members with opportunities to discuss, share their interest and learn more about the television series. The group is open for all students, wether you are fan of the show or have an interest in science fiction, or neither!"
More information can be found here:
Email: docsocmq@gmail.com
Quidditch Association
Quidditch is arguably (in my opinion) the greatest sport ever created. Based off the Harry Potter franchise written by J. K. Rowling, real life quidditch though not magical, is a fun game to play. People throw balls through hoops, run around on brooms and aim to catch the human golden snitch who can run wherever they like until caught. It's a great way to socialise and have a laugh!
"The objectives of the Club are to promote the sport of Quidditch at Macquarie University as a social, fun and participatory activity, conducting regular Social Quidditch Sessions and fostering training of a formal representative Macquarie University"

AnimeMQ
If you're into anime comics, cartoons or art, AnimeMQ is the group for you! With many members, the group meets to talk and create manga, as well as share their love for the art form.
"To spread the influence of Japanese Animation and Manga along with various influences of popular Japanese sub-culture in the University. Also to allow students and others with common interest to meet and socialise in events on and off campus."

Sport Programs:
Macquarie University has a wide reputation in the field of sport; whether for fun, socialising or competitive. Ranging from Chess and Squash to Rugby, Netball, Soccer, Waterpolo and Basketball, Macquarie has a great variety of sporting groups and programs to satisfy your sporting needs with the MacWarrior cheering you on!
"Whether you are looking to keep active, maintain wellbeing or play sport at a competitive level, we offer an array of sporting options available for Students, Staff and members of the local community!"

Finding The Right Student Group For You!
By: Tim Cheeseman
One of the greatest things about university (besides all that edu-ma-cation stuff) would have to be, in my opinion, meeting new people with similar interests. The social life at Macquarie is pretty fantastic, where uni groups allow you to socialise while having fun, collaborating on interesting projects, making social changes and even just discussing some interesting ideas.
On discovering MQU I'll list in two separate parts some of the groups that I'm a part of/think you'll find interesting, but first I'll give you some links to where you can find some the groups that suit you!
The first is the Macquarie University website that has a whole page listing all the Macquarie certified groups. This page can be found here: http://mq.edu.au/on_campus/get_involved/student_groups/
The next is on Facebook, where an entire list of Macquarie Uni Groups are up, with forums on each for current events and help needed. This can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/groupsatmacquarie/
Now to that list you've all been waiting for! Here are a few groups that I think are really worth joining!
The W.A.N.G. Club
This group is a great way to socialise if you like a good party and free sausage sizzles. It was started for the sole purpose of meeting people and getting the freebies that you signed up for. To join the group it's only $10 for the year, and you renew each year for $5. Bargain if you ask me!
"The W.A.N.G Club is a student run organisation whose sole purpose is to have fun. We do this through providing free sausage sizzles and organising exciting social events for our members!"
Their Facebook page can be found here:
Filmsoc
The Macquarie Uni Film Society is a great way to experience film. As a film maker myself, I find it's a great way to get your creative work seen by people with similar interests, a great way to collaborate and a great way to see Movies for a cheap price!
Their statement is: "Aims to provide, at Macquarie University, films for entertainment of students, and to promote the appreciation of films as an art form, as well as encouraging student-made films."
Their Facebook page can be found here:
MACQUARIE UNI CHALK ART SOCIETY (MUCAS)
MUCAS is a great way to express yourself at university, where many people get to creatively share their ideas and statements about issues they feel strongly about, or just DRAW!
Their statement says:
"Release your inner chalk! MUCAS aims to combine you, chalk, and Macquarie Uni concrete. Beautify the campus with your creative genius. Chalking is fun and soothing. It’s good for you, like fruit juice!"
Their Facebook Page can be found here:
Macquarie University Musicians Society (MQMUSO)
This group is one that is very dear to my heart as a musician, where the group allows you to share your music, as well as meet and collaborate with other musicians! The sign up fee is only $2 (pretty steep) but it's well worth it, where they organise things like Battle Of The Bands as well as other music events throughout the year.
Their statement is:
"To provide Macquarie University students a network with which they can use to connect with like-minded musicians."
There Facebook page can be found here:
IMCOLOURBLIND @MQ
This Macquarie Group has a simple purpose; "Uniting students through the common bond of the human race, while working towards the elimination of racial discriminations."
The initiative does a few things that you might like to help out with, whilst meeting new people. It's a good social initiative if you're into that sort of stuff! This is taken from their website, found here:
- IMCOLOURBLIND Inc. Library Initiative. We have been developing libraries in detention centres by sending educational books around Australia. We have also expanded this initiative to remote Indigenous communities.
- IMCOLOURBLIND Inc. Fashion. Our fashion promotes our values with innovative messages. Our t-shirts are now for sale in retail outlets.
- IMCOLOURBLIND Human Rights Education. We have run human rights awareness sessions in high school. Our goal here is to develop human rights awareness among children. An IMCOLOURBLIND Inc. inspired project, which we are very excited about is the Wrist4Rights projects developed by THINK! Global School students.
- IMCOLOURBLIND Inc. monthly e-newsletter. This is an online issue, which publishes topical articles by students touching on the themes relating to our values. We also have a cultural gig guide to publisize intercultural events in your area. The goal of this issue is to develop awareness of different cultures and of concerns that any cultural groups are experiencing.
- Advocacy and Social Activism: We host stalls, develop awareness projects and link up with other NGO’s to develop awareness for human rights, non-discrimination and equality. Our most recent partnership is with One Day on Earth (11/11/11).
That's just some of the groups that you can join at Macquarie. Make sure you check out the website and Facebook Group Page for more groups, as well as check my next post for some more recommendations!
Ciao for now,

Exploring the Library
By Jeremy Thomas
You’re
probably thinking, big deal….the library, but bear with me! This 5 level structure has so much to offer.
| One of the plantation bays on level 2. |
For
starters, both its initial construction and design were based heavily upon
environmental sustainability. A lot of the material used to construct the
library came from post-consumer recycled content, while 80% of the construction
waste was recycled. Keeping on with the green theme, most of the roofing of the
library has plantation. Yeah it looks good, but that isn’t the main reason. The water that’s collected in the plantation
is stored in a massive water tank underground. This tank is then used for garden irrigation
as well as the library toilets. Next time you’re doing your business in the
toilet, check out the water colour! (It’s brown). Continuing on, there’s two
plantation bays found on both levels 1 and 2.
Covered by glass panels, they provide a vast amount of natural light,
reducing energy usage on artificial lighting.
Let’s roll
on to other things. The library contains
over 200 computers which of course have the handy use of printing. Can’t find a
free computer? That’s ok, you can also hire netbooks for a short amount of time
from the service desk. In addition to this, you can also hire out laptop
lockers. Charge your laptop while you’re out and about doing other things.
Books? Yeah
it has books, lots of books, in fact the library contains over 1.8 million print
and electronic items. They are retrieved both online and in the library on
levels 1 and 2. More interestingly, a lot of the libraries books are stored
underground and are selected for use via computer. This is known as ARC
(Automated Retrieval Collection) a computerized machine that retrieves your
selection, pretty fancy stuff. The Library also contains restricted access
collections of particular books, journals, newspapers etc. They can be accessed
but under firm supervision.
More?
Yes! There’s lots more. Every level has
some assortment of study areas. Comfortable lounges, desks with laptop chargers
and of course group presentation areas, commonly known as practice pods. These
pods contain whiteboards, LCD screens and interactive whiteboards, so grab your
group together and go nuts! On the odd occasion you get a bit peckish or
possibly tired from the strenuous study, check out the library café right near
the entrance, great to place to have a coffee and relax. Last thing on the
agenda is the exciting exhibitions the library holds. Although I’ve yet to see
one myself, they do seem pretty interesting. Have a look at past collections
here: http://library.mq.edu.au/exhibitions/archive.html
![]() |
| MQU Library entrance |
I highly
encourage everyone to explore the library and trust me when I say, ask staff
for help, they know everything. Overall, who knew a library had so much depth.

Discovering Student Life!
By Tim Cheeseman
Hey guys, it's Tim here! As a first year student at Macquarie, I know the difficulties and the struggles of starting uni life straight out of high school. In fact, if you're a first year like me, I'm undertaking this journey with you! Today I'd like to share 7 tips that I've found have helped me, and may help you too during this tough transition.
- Meeting People:
Meeting people was for me (and maybe you) the most important part of starting university. Leaving high school with a whole grade of friends, coming into university with maybe only a handful of friends you have to make some new ones! A good way to make friends is by joining university groups, introducing yourself to the person next to you in tutorials and lectures and overall just being you. Everyone is in the same boat and chances are if you're in the same classes or course, you're bound to have similar interests!
2. Knowing Your Way Around:
When you're introduced to a new place, it's fairly hard to work your way around. At Macquarie it's no different, where classes are so spread out that it can be near impossible to find places. You definitely don't want to look like the nerdy newbie with a map, so a great way to find your away around is by downloading the smartphone app "Lost On Campus". The app is almost a GPS navigation system of many different campuses across Australia, that gives you directions to each of your classes from the spot that you're standing. It's a great app to have and might save you from looking 'lost'. Here's a link to the website: http://lostoncampus.com.au/
3. Choosing your groups:
Choosing your groups for group assignments are particularly important when starting uni. Usually you'll have to choose groups in the first few weeks of starting your class, and you'll be pretty much stuck with them for the rest of the semester. So here, it's important to be careful about the groups that you choose. Make sure you'll choose people that are hardworking (like yourself) so that one person isn't stuck doing all the work.
4. Do your work:
If you're like me, you leave everything to the last minute. You procrastinate, and do absolutely ANYTHING to put off doing your work. BUT just as a warning, if you do put your assignments to the last minute, at the very least do your readings and listen to your lectures each week. When you're trying to do assignments last minute, it helps if you have your notes and information already, rather than starting from scratch.
Also, don't be the person in group assignments who doesn't do anything. You let down the team and basically the marks reflect upon you. And quite frankly, they will not like you at all.
5. Don't be THAT guy:
Please, whatever you do, don't be the guy that puts his hand up in every lecture asking questions. That's what the tutorials are for. You don't want to waste the time of everyone else in the room, so only ask questions in a lecture if ABSOLUTELY necessary, otherwise save them for the tutorial.
6. Student Lunch Deals:
Within the Campus Hub or the Macquarie Centre there are many places that offer student deals to get cheaper than normal. Especially during lunch time, take a look at all the deals around and find places you like. Don't be afraid to try new things, especially if they're cheap!
7. Know your surroundings
Lastly, and what I believe is the most fun; discover places around the uni. You might enjoy studying outside and finding a good place to relax etc. Go for a walk around the campus and find places you like and you might discover more than what you bargained for.
Hopefully these tips have helped you to start making the best of your uni experience!
